Fear in the Shadows is a thriller by author Heron Mimouni. Please be advised that this selection has some very explicit content and probably is not suited for younger readers. That is, of course just my personal opinion.
The story's protagonist is Celine, who prefers to be called Louise. She is a troubled young woman living in Paris, who right from the jump, experiences some horrific and gut wrenching situations.
Louise has a strained relationship with her parents and has had trouble holding a job. Her world is upended, although her life is already a mess, when she meets a man online and against her better judgement agrees to meet him face to face. Chaos and a whirlwind of disturbing events follow.
Louise is confined to a women's detention facility where she meets a slew of characters who range from sweet and helpful to sadistic and disturbed. On top of the issues that landed her in prison, she is also dealing with the mysterious death of her cell mate, which she realizes may be more than what it seems.
When inmates start dying in apparent suicides, there seems to be a connection but Louise has a hard time convincing anyone to help her. There is an air of secrecy and of people simply not wanting to get involved.
The search for the connection between the dead inmates and the realization that there is something sinister going on leads to a shocking conclusion.
This was a suspenseful read, and the story moves very quickly. I had a tough time keeping up but the overall mystery of the plot kept my interests piqued. It's not an exceptionally long story so you could probably get through it in a weekend. A good short read. I enjoyed it but again, the subject matter is adult themed, so make sure you are prepared for that piece of it.
Additionally, I believe this book was originally written in French. There are some small problems with the translation in that some of the sentence structure is off.

This is one of the finest books I’ve read this year.
Other reviews have said it’s an ‘adults only’ book which is true, but that’s only because the content of the material is deeply revealing in respect of what occurs in a women’s prison.
Forget ‘Orange Is The New Black’ – this book is a real eye opener.
For me it was as if the actual crime thriller ran secondary to how the prison, inmates and guards operated and interacted with one another. By setting the story in a ‘women's detention facility’ the need to solve the suspicious suicides increases dramatically because of the hardships of prison life. Alongside her own personal demons, inmate-come-sleuth Celine (aka Louise) is also forced to contend with the myriad of problematic personalities jailed with her.
This story is a rollercoaster that never slows down. It’s gritty and harsh and unpalatable at times, but that’s how real life is. If you like suspense you won’t be disappointed by this read.

Fear in the Shadows by Corinne Heron-Mimouni is a very suspense filled novel that keeps the reader intrigued throughout. I found this to be a very quick read not for its length but because it kept my interest and kept me reading. There is suspense at every corner in this penitentiary/crime novel that really keeps you gripping your set. I thought that the book was well written and fast paced. The setting and the world of the penal system is very well detailed and thought out giving the reader a good look into the lives of the inmates. My favorite thing about the book however is that it is a real nail bitter and really kept my interest, the setting and its details just add to the suspense and the drama that this novel provides.

Fear in the Shadows documents the violence and brutality that is prison life. Louise, an inmate at Fresnes' womens' facility, is a victim of a rough life and the bad choices she's made. As she adjusts to her new reality behind bars, a series of mysterious deaths begin to occur among the incarcerated population. When the death count hits close to home after her bunkmate dies, Louise is motivated to uncover the motivation behind all the killings masked as suicides.
Author Heron Mimouni mixes extreme violence and intrigue into a winning novel. The plot is gripping and the characters are gritty in a way necessary given their life's circumstances. It's a gripping story that will keep you guessing until the very end.

This book is definitely for adults only. The subject of prison alone is for a mature audience. The main character Louise gets involved with the wrong guy and ends up making some bad choices, but that isn’t even the worst part. Once she is detained that’s when her life really takes a turn. Being a witness to the chaos of a woman’s prison, Louise also wonders about the death of her cellmate.
One of the biggest mysteries of this novel is the numerous deaths of inmates. No one is sure whether they are murders or suicides. This is the perfect book to read on a quiet afternoon, it is a quick and easy read. It does have very mature content, so be prepared.
